When I was 8 or 9 I remember having a nightmare, a bad nightmare. I was being chased by this little red demon thing. He would chase me around my house and then he caught me. That was when I woke up, the first time. You see, I woke up several times in this nightmare. Each time I was sure that I was awake and then that little red demon would pop out again. I believe I woke up three times in the nightmare before I actually was awake. I still remember this nightmare clearly today. I can still picture that little red demon, I still remember the feeling of waking up multiple times, and I remember the fear. Nightmares are something that everyone can relate to. Our minds can do some crazy things even when we're awake. What our minds can do in our dreams and nightmares can be really freaky stuff. Anybody who has ever had a nightmare should be freaked out by this movie.
A Nightmare on Elm Street was released in 1984, starring Robert Englund as the terrifying Fred Krueger. The movie focuses on Nancy, a teenager, and her friends. It begins with Tina in the middle of a nightmare being stalked by a severely burned figure with a bladed glove on his hand. Tina wakes up terrified and finds that she has four slashes in her nightgown just like she got in the nightmare. At school the next day Tina begins to talk to her friends about her nightmare and they discover that they have all had similar nightmares. That night the friends all go to Nancy's house where we see the first nightmare killing. Tina, who the movie opened on, has another nightmare and this time is killed in it. Her boyfriend Rod watches as Tina is killed by an invisible force. Since Rod was the only one in the room with her he is suspected of killing her and is arrested the next day. While at school, Nancy has a nightmare where she has to burn her arm in the nightmare to wake up. When she's awake she notices that she still has the burn on her arm that she got in the nightmare. The rest of the movie follows Nancy and her friends as they try to figure out what is going on and how to stop Freddy.
This movie has many memorable scenes but the one that sticks out in my mind is Glen's, Johnny Depp's, death. He falls asleep on his waterbed and Freddie pulls him down into it and then we see a giant geyser of blood shoot out of the bed onto the ceiling. There's no way any human body holds that much blood but the scene was still freaky and it may also be why nobody sleeps on waterbeds anymore.
This movie did have its flaws. The acting was pretty bad and the fight scene with Nancy and Freddy was pretty lame. The ending of the movie needed a lot of work with Nancy setting “booby traps” for Freddy after she pulled him out of the nightmare world. That being said, the fear that this movie brings out is what really makes it great. One of the best parts of this movie is the music in all of the scenes that is truly creepy. Also while a lot of the deaths are bloody they actually are not overly gory or ridiculous. The other smart thing that they did was they limited how much we saw of Freddy which only made us fear him more. In most scenes with Freddy all we see is his razor glove or his shadowy silhouette. This is something that bad horror movies don't understand, they give us way too much of the monster or villain and don't leave anything to our imagination. While most of the sequels we're not very good, this movie will forever be a classic and deserves to be number one on our list.
If you have not seen any of the movies on our list that is what you need to do on this Halloween night. Please let us know your opinions on this list, we know that some of you disagree and we want to hear it.
