Top Ten Horror Films Countdown: #3 Cabin in the Woods

By: Kyle Groulx

Today we bring you our #3 horror movie in our Top Ten Horror Movie Countdown, and we’re pretty excited about it. Cabin in the Woods made our #3 spot, and if you’ve seen the movie you can probably understand why. Cabin in the Woods is the type of horror movie that you just can’t look away from. For those of you horror fans who have still managed to go this long without seeing this movie, you’re missing out.

Cabin in the Woods is a unique horror film that was released in 2012. The film was directed by Drew Goddard, in which he makes his directorial debut. Produced by Joss Whedon, and written by Goddard and Whedon respectively, Cabin in the Woods is a satirical horror movie that embraces its dark style of humor, and earns its spot as one of the few horror movie greats. Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard had worked together in the past on the Television great Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and their teamwork really shines from beginning to end in this film.

Cabin in the Woods lays on the intrigue and mystery from the very start, showing us an opening scene that revolves around two men, in business attire, having a casual conversation about their personal lives. These men slowly progress their way through a large complex, where we can see they clearly work at a well-structured company with lots of activity. Lots of movement, employees on the go, everyone seems to be a bit rushed, yet these two gentleman seem to have it all figured out. They discuss their current project, as they slowly drive their way through the building in a golf cart. In the end of the scene, we see a third employee, approach the two men claiming that they’re current project in Sweden had failed. The men seem unaffected by the news, and continue to enjoy their conversation.

Cut to a warm day in a suburban neighborhood where we see our five protagonists come together for a trip to a cabin in the woods, they come together and prepare to go camping and once they’re bags are packed and they’re all grouped together, they venture off for a night of excitement and drinking.

It doesn’t take long for the movie to start throwing punches, giving the viewer no time to wrap their heads around exactly what is happening. As the movie progresses, the looming thought of “What is going on” will be running through your head.

This movie does a great job of keeping you guessing, with an outcome that, in my opinion, did not disappoint. Horror movies these days struggle to stand out, and Cabin in the Woods stood out in all the right ways. Astonishing Special FX, crisp dialogue and unique humor throughout, and a cast that did an excellent job of delivering believable and honest behavior in a horror film, where many casts struggle to do so. I tried to write this review as spoiler free as I could because if you’re reading this and you have yet to see the film, you should put down the mouse and go rent it immediately. Its Halloween time guys! Live a little.

Overall, Cabin in the Woods does not disappoint, and if you’re a horror movie fan like all of us at Atomic Geekdom, then you should probably give this one a chance. Cabin in the Woods made our top ten list because of its humor, its plot twists, and its outstanding creature design. If you have yet to check it out, go see it as soon as you can. We’re always curious to know what you guys think, would Cabin in the Woods have made your top ten horror film list? Sound of in the comments.
