Marvel Drops The Hammer on Hall H!

By: Dave Clark

Saturday is always a monster day for Geek news coming out of SDCC. Hall H is the place to be for breaking news about upcoming movies, casting news, and brand new trailers. We already saw what WB and DC unveiled, not to be outdone, Marvel stepped up and knocked it out of the park again (can't get enough baseball cliches).

First up was Black Panther! Director Ryan Coogler revealed a new logo for the film and also confirmed the cast. Chadwick Boseman returns to the titular role of T'Challa aka Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan will play Erik Killmonger, Lupita Nyong'o will play Nakia (former member of Wakanda's Dora Milaje, now an agent of Killmonger) and Danai Gurira as Okoye (a member of the Dora Milaje, the wives-in-training for the King of Wakanda). Black Panther is set to be released on February 16, 2018.

Doctor Strange would be next up to hit the stage, giving us a brand new trailer for the upcoming foray into the mystical side of Marvel set to hit theaters on November 4, 2016.

Earlier in the day, Marvel revealed the Gladiator Hulk armor from Thor: Ragnarok, and when they hit the stage it was confirmed that the Planet Hulk storyline has been adapted into the plot of Thor: Ragnarok. They also gave us a very 80's Masters of the Universe-ish logo for the film set to be released on November 3, 2017.

The big, gigantic, huge piece of casting news that had this writer filled with joy was the confirmation that Brie Larson will portray Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel! They didn't mention if she'd pop up in a MCU movie before the Captain Marvel film is set to hit theaters on March 8, 2019, but with two Avengers films bookending that release date (May 4, 2018 & May 3, 2019) I think its safe to say we may see her sooner that! Personally, I've been a huge fan of her work for a very long time and I believe she's going to be great!

The "Bad Boys" of the MCU, Guardians of the Galaxy, were up next and they didn't disappoint! Not only did they continue the trend of flashy new logos, but they revealed just exactly who Peter Quill's father will be in the film! Kurt Russell will be playing Quill's papa, EGO. Yes, Ego the Living Planet. How does that work? Director James Gunn says it'll be explained in the film. They showed a lengthy montage from the production which Gunn outlines on his Facebook page here.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to be released on May 5, 2017.

As if all of this news wasn't enough...we even got some Spider-Man: Homecoming nuggets as well! Marvel revealed a piece of concept art showing Spidey battling The Vulture!

Also revealed was the official first synopsis for the film:

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Marvel Studios’ “Captain: Civil War,” begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging superhero in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit theaters on July 7, 2017.

Wow. That's a lot for one panel inside the cavernous Hall H. What'd you guys think? What was your favorite piece of news dropped on Saturday from Marvel? Are you excited for the future of the MCU? Sound off below!
