BEST OF, MISC.

YEAR IN REVIEW / Best of 2021

By Jenny Robinson

Every year, we see headlines of how bizarre, insane and exciting the passing year has been. Although a bit better than 2020, this 2021 year has also been quite the ride.

We started with hopes for an end to covid with the distribution of vaccines. A mob stormed our capital. It was the year NTF’s took their first baby steps and rich people went to space. We saw plenty of memes of the large cargo ship blocking the Suez Canal and Bernie Sanders mittens. As we leave this wacky year, we said goodbye to Norm MacDonald, Anne Rice, Michael K. Williams, DMX, Ed Asner and sadly more. We are still struggling through the pandemic with the new Omnicron variant but also see the return of Hollywood blockbusters. As with each year, we have ups and downs but there has always been amazing entertainment to keep our head in the clouds (and our feet on the ground).

Atomic Geekdom has been busy this year as well. We have relaunched our website with new articles and reviews. We made it back to the Con and excited to post new videos of all the cosplayers again. Dave and Kyle now do live streams on Twitch, Facebook Live and YouTube that are must-see. We added some amazing guest writers (thank you Brandon, Dave2, Annie, Patrick and Allan) and look forward to working with them again, while also adding some other new voices next year.

We are very proud of our direction and momentum moving into 2022.

Now…THE LISTS!

It’s sometimes difficult to remember all the awesome stuff from the past 12 months. I loved going through everyone’s favorite lists of the year. Not only does it show how different we each are but also how very similar we seem to be.

In true Justin fashion, Pig topped his movie list. “Probably one of the best modern performances of Nicolas Cage. If you are a fan of Nic Cage in general, this film solidifies how he doesn't have to go "full Cage" to make a film great.” (check out the review Justin and I did for our Four Eyes Review and stay tuned for more of Justin’s “Nic Guage” articles in 2022).

Image Comic’s Stray Dogs also had quite a few top choice awards in the comic category. Stray Dogs is like Lady and the Tramp meets Silence of the Lambs.

Annie tapped in with a “Hard Tie” for her top series by saying “Yellowjackets! Taken a lifetime to get Juliette Lewis and Christina Ricci in a killer script! The wait has been worth it! A mid 90’s female Lord Of The Flies, with so much more! Can’t recommend enough! But then, CHUCKY!!! FINALLY got the continuation we deserved!! AND Tiffany!! Epic writing and casting. Hoping for Glenn & Glenda to make an appearance in s2!”

Comically, many of us struggled to nail it down to just one.

Spider-Man and Ghostbusters topped most lists for those who have been able to see them. The Green Knight (review HERE) and Heels received multiple mentions. Both myself and Matt still hold Relentless in the #1 book spot (reviews HERE).

Safe to say, it was a good year.

MOVIE REVIEWS, MOVIES, SUPERHEROES

Review: Avengers: Infinity War

It's been ten years in the making and it has taken 18 films to reach the pinnacle of what will be the biggest game-changer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After only showing up briefly throughout the films (Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, & Avengers: Age of Ultron), Thanos has taken center stage with the Black Order as they reign chaos in Avengers: Infinity War. I will be giving a brief non-spoiler review, and then diving in to go over some of the best (and very spoiler-filled) moments.

Avengers: Infinity War Trailer & Predictions

Ever since they announced that the film was being pushed up a week to April 27th, we all have been asking the same question; Is there going to be a second trailer? We are a little over a month away and all we have is that one teaser trailer three months ago.

Avengers Infinity War Teaser Trailer

After 10 years, 18 films, and over 30 characters introduced among the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have finally reached the film that everyone was talking about since we first saw Thanos in the end credit scene of the first Avenger film; Avengers: Infinity War teaser trailer. If you have not seen it yet, here it is:

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Review

I just got out of seeing "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and I have things to tell you. I overall enjoyed the film, but I did have some small issues. Nothing that really ruined the film, but just felt off or out of place.

CON LIFE

Heroes & Villains FanFest Chicago 2017!

Heroes and Villains is a convention that celebrates the comic book genre in film, television and in the comics. Meanwhile, Walker Stalker Con is a convention that celebrates the zombie genre, notably The Walking Dead. This year in Chicago the cons mashed up in a glorious team-up effort to combine stars from Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Gotham, Sons of Anarchy, and The Walking Dead! Check out our video below and the photo gallery just below that!

CON LIFE, EVENTS

Long Beach Comic Expo 2017

Convention season is upon us and the coverage here at Atomic Geekdom is coming in fast and furious. Long Beach Comic Expo came and went with Justin, Jenny, and Patrick filming the entire event! Check out our video below and the photo gallery below that and if you're in our footage, let us know! @AtomicGeedom on Twitter and Instagram!

Marvel, COMIC CON

Marvel Drops The Hammer on Hall H!

Saturday is always a monster day for Geek news coming out of SDCC. Hall H is the place to be for breaking news about upcoming movies, casting news, and brand new trailers. We already saw what WB and DC unveiled, not to be outdone, Marvel stepped up and knocked it out of the park again (can't get enough baseball cliches).

Wizard World Comic Con: St. Louis 2015!

Over the past weekend, we attended Wizard World Comic Con in St. Louis. I was able to sit in on a few panels with Billy Boyd, George Romero, Michael Rooker and Jason Mewes, and Hayley Atwell and Lyndsy Fonseca. I was also lucky enough to talk with Michael Rooker and B.J. Britt one on one in an interview that you can hear in this week's Podcast. All the photos were taken by my great friend and photographer Liz Domkoski

Possible Writers

Possible Candidates To Write Captain Marvel Film

Marvel Studios has always done a great job in hiring talented writers and directors for its Cinematic Universe. It seems Captain Marvel is following suit. According to The Hollywood Reporter, writers Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) are in talks to write the script about Carol Danvers becoming a super-powered heroine. With Captain Marvel scheduled to be Marvel's first female led film, its important that the story is done very well and sets the table for her joining the Avengers in films to come.

Pop Gospel: 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

For those of you who have read my bio on the site, you may already know that I am a Christian. I made the decision to accept Jesus as my savior in middle school and since then everything that I experience is viewed through the lens of God`s Word, the Bible. As a huge fan of all things that reside in the Geekdom, I also view those things through that same lens. Quite often, I will read a comic book or watch a movie and see a strong biblical message within. The reality is that many of the attributes that we love about our heroes/villains and situations they get into can be found in the Bible. For example, we like our heroes to be honest, bold, and courageous. The Bible encourages all of us to be those things, not just those of us that are "super". That is what this regular article will focus on, the biblical ideas and lessons that I see within my favorite comics, TV shows, and movies. I would love to write an article on anything that you guys suggest I read or watch.

Ranking the Marvel Cinematic Universe

So after having a fun conversation with a friend of mind and with the release of 'Guardians of the Galaxy' the MCU count being at an even ten I figure ranking the MCU might be fun. Now the Phase Two plan from Marvel ends with 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' but ten is such a nice even, clean number so we'll rank the first ten films of the MCU in order of favorite to least favorite. I say "least favorite" because there's not one MCU film I hated. So I'll get the ball rolling and then all of you fellow AG'ers out there can chime in with your lists and opinions of my list. Here goes!

Dancing Groot

Scene from 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

Well...by now you've likely seen this on the internet or if you've actually seen the film already. I was debating posting this since it's everywhere and not really news worthy but I figured that if nothing else, it'll make ya smile. There's a bit of spoilerish material in the clip, but nothing that would ruin the film for anyone. So....enjoy!

GotG Review

Review: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' (Spoilers)

Marvel has been destroying the box office with its series of films in a connected universe. We've seen the big guns, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, and Thor (the male version.) Even the semi-lesser known characters of Nick Fury, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. When the film 'Guardians of the Galaxy' was announced, I was forced to go "huh." I knew about them, but i wasn't nearly as well-versed into their mythology and was wondering why this was on their slate of films to make. Warning, SPOILERS ahead!

Marvel SDCC Panel

Marvel Studios Panel at SDCC

The evening began with a very long montage video of all the films, heroes, villains including Guardians of the Galaxy and a great look at Thanos. Kevin Feige came out and said they're focusing on 2015, which means Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-man which they began with.
