New Venom Trailer Reveals The Evil Within

By: Justin Pomerville

The day has arrived! The film everyone has been waiting for and no, I'm not talking about Avengers: Infinity War, I'm talking about the new trailer for Sony's standalone Venom film.

If you haven't seen it yet, check it out here:

I have some initial thoughts, and the majority of them are not very good.

It's a very bland trailer from the get-go. The idea of making a Venom movie is not a bad idea, but the main backstory of Venom is that after bonding with Peter Parker and being rejected, the symbiote bonds with Eddie to exact revenge on Peter. This film, from the footage seen in both trailers this far, is going to completely forget that part of the story and skip to Eddie being the first to bond with the symbiote. Feels like a terrible way to go because that is why Venom looks the way he does, to mirror Spider-Man. To negate that history changes the idea of Venom and doesn't even make him feel like a villain in this film. It feels more like some stumbling reporter who accidentally come across the symbiote.

While we are on the topic of the word symbiote, it is being butchered in this trailer. The woman in the film is pronouncing it as 'Sim-Bye-Oat' other shows like Spider-Man: The Animated Series and Ultimate Spider-Man pronounce it as 'Sim-Bee-Oat'. It's a minor thing, but to all Spider-Man fans, it's a big deal.

The last thing is the design of Venom himself. The CGI on the symbiote is not as strong as I would have liked and unfortunately. it reminds me more the ink physics in the video games called Bendy and The Ink Machine. I don't enjoy the weird disjointed, gargling voice they gave Venom but hey, he's got the tongue, so...there's that.

Overall, unless the next trailer blows me away, I'll still be seeing it, but I won't be rushing out to the theater a soon as the film comes out. Venom is set to hit theaters on October 5th, 2018.
